Dear Mr Maze,
Your letter of April 17th reached me the follow-
ing day. Thank you for sending the copy of your
letter to Stephenson of April 16th.
I do not myself at present see clearly on this
question of a Hong Kong Customs Agreement, and there
are certain points regarding which I am at present
in communication with the Foreign Office. When
they are clearer than they are now it is more than
likely that I shall be suggesting to you that we
have a talk together on the whole question. I shall
probably be in Shanghai for a couple of days before
I go North early next month. My dates are uncertain,
but I will let you know later, for even if there is
nothing concrete to be said then regarding the
Agreement (which I ought to know shortly), I should
